Cardiac Surgical Intensive Care Unit

Cardiac Surgical Intensive Care Unit is the place where a total care of a patient is given. These are patients who have gone through the surgery of their heart or different parts of the heart. 99% of the patients coming to the Intensive care units are on ventilator. Hence most of the cardiac surgical intensive care unit patients are in a stage of haemodynamic instability. Thus taking care of these patients who are sedated and is controlled by the attending Surgeons, Anesthesiologists, Intensivists and Nursing staff is utmost important. Any change in the haemodynamics requires immediate assessment, analysis and correction. This way these patients are able to have a smooth course through the Intensive Care Unit. Such an Intensive Care Unit like any of the department in the hospital requires a strict protocol, which has to be adhered to. Any deviation from the protocol would be made only after discussion among the Intensive care unit members. Strictly speaking the idea of developing protocols for such a high-tension department is to provide confidence. That is in the Intensive Care Unit only the patient should be the variable. Whoever may be the attending physician or the nurse, the treatment given to these patients should be the same for the particular ailment.
