Cardiac Surgical Intensive Care Unit

Cardiac Surgical Intensive Care Unit is the place where a total care of a patient is given. These are patients who have gone through the surgery of their heart or different parts of the heart. 99% of the patients coming to the Intensive care units are on ventilator. Hence most of the cardiac surgical intensive care unit patients are in a stage of haemodynamic instability. Thus taking care of these patients who are sedated and is controlled by the attending Surgeons, Anesthesiologists, Intensivists and Nursing staff is utmost important. Any change in the haemodynamics requires immediate assessment, analysis and correction. This way these patients are able to have a smooth course through the Intensive Care Unit. Such an Intensive Care Unit like any of the department in the hospital requires a strict protocol, which has to be adhered to. Any deviation from the protocol would be made only after discussion among the Intensive care unit members. Strictly speaking the idea of developing protocols for such a high-tension department is to provide confidence. That is in the Intensive Care Unit only the patient should be the variable. Whoever may be the attending physician or the nurse, the treatment given to these patients should be the same for the particular ailment.

The thought that each and every procedure or move made by the staff would be of utmost importance to maintain the life of the patient. Hence I request all the staff going through this Cardiac Surgical Intensive Care Unit to go through this protocol and stick to the best of their ability.

Echo TMT

In Aster MIMS Cardiac we have fully functioning interventional cardiology, 8 Bedded CCU and well advanced cathlab. CCU equipped with advanced cardiac monitors, defibrillators, intra aortic pumps, ventilators, BI-pap, ECG machine, Syringe pump, an infusion pump, ABG machine, CK.MB, and Trop I machine. Cardiology department also have a well equipped TMT, 2D Echo, 3D echo & fetal echo facility. We also doing both adult & paediatric TEE, Holter monitoring.

There are several types of echo cardiography (echo)all use sound waves to create Moving pictures of heart. This is the same technology that allows doctors to see an Unborn baby inside a pregnant women. Unlike x rays and some others tests. Echo doesn't involve radiation.

Here we are doing 4 type echo cardio:-

TRANSTHORACIC ECHO CARDIOGRAPHY

2D Echo is the most common type of echocardiogram test. Its painless and non invasive."Non invasive" means that no surgery is done and no instruments are inserted in to our body.

These types of echo involve placing a device called a transducer on chest. The device sends special sound waves, called ultrasound through chest wall to heart. The human ear can't hear ultrasound waves. As the ultrasound waves bounds off the structures of heart. A computer in the echo machines converts them in to pictures on a screen

TRANS OESOPHAGAL ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY

During the test, the transducer is attached to the end of a flexible tube. The tube is guided down the throat and into esophagus (the passage leading from mouth to stomach). This allows doctors to get more detailed pictures of heart.

DOBUTAMINE STRESS ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY.

Stress echo is done as part of a stress test. During a stress test Exercise or take medicine (given by doctor) to make heart work hard and beat fast. Technician will use echo to create pictures of heart before exercise and as soon as finish. Some beat problems such as coronary artery disease are easier to diagnose when the heart is working hard and beating fast.

FOETAL ECHO CARDIOGRAPHY

Foetal echo is used to look at an unborn baby’s heart. A doctor may recommend this test to check a baby for heart problems. When recommended, the test is commonly done at about. 18-22 week of pregnancy. For this test, the transducer is moved over the pregnant women’s belly.
